Your Local Plumber & HVAC Company in Sonoma

Sonoma is the oldest town in the county in the way that matters to us: the plaza is the largest in California, the mission and the adobes around it are genuinely historic, and the residential streets immediately off the square hold houses that were old before most of the rest of the county was built. Further out the valley opens into newer housing and a good number of properties that are second homes rather than year-round residences.

We are about twenty miles northwest in Santa Rosa and Sonoma is a regular run. The valley also holds its heat — summers here are hot and the older housing was built long before air conditioning was a consideration — so cooling retrofits are a large part of what we are asked about.

What We See in Sonoma Homes

The historic housing near the plaza needs a careful hand. Thick old walls, original finishes worth keeping, and plumbing that has been worked on by many people over many decades. It is common to find galvanized supply still feeding part of a house, cast iron carrying the waste, and a sewer lateral of unknown age running out under a street with mature trees on it. On houses like these we would rather camera the line and know than open anything speculatively.

Properties that stand empty for part of the year carry the same risk they do in Healdsburg. Nothing about a slow leak or a failing water heater is dramatic until it has had a few weeks to itself. If a house sits unoccupied, the main shutoff needs to be findable and it needs to actually turn — that is a five-minute check that has saved people a great deal.

Cooling is the recurring request. The valley gets genuinely hot and the older housing has nowhere to run ductwork without damaging what makes the house worth owning. Ductless mini-splits are the usual answer, sited so the indoor units are not the first thing you see in a room. Where a house already has ducts, the work is more often a condenser that has stopped coping with the worst afternoons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Action Plumbing serve the City of Sonoma?
Yes. Sonoma is about twenty miles southeast of our Santa Rosa base and we are there regularly for both plumbing and heating and air. Routine service and 24/7 emergencies both covered.
Can you work on historic homes near the Plaza?
Yes, and carefully. Older Sonoma houses often have galvanized supply lines, cast iron waste and a sewer lateral of unknown age. We would rather inspect with a camera and know what is there than open walls or floors speculatively in a house worth preserving.
It gets very hot here and my house has no ducts. What are my options?
Ductless mini-splits. They cool the rooms you actually use without running ductwork through a historic structure, the outdoor unit can usually be sited out of sight, and they provide heating as well. It is the most common cooling retrofit we do in the valley.
Is there a travel fee for Sonoma?
No additional travel fee. Sonoma is within our standard service area and our normal service call rate applies.
My Sonoma house is empty for months at a time. What should I do before I leave?
Know where the main shutoff is and confirm it turns — many old valves have seized. Consider the age of the water heater rather than waiting for it to fail with nobody there, and have anything you already suspect looked at before you go rather than after.
Do you handle both plumbing and air conditioning?
Yes. CSLB #325110 covers plumbing and warm-air HVAC, so one visit can deal with both rather than coordinating separate trades on a property you may not be at.
